Many of you have come across a blue screen while trying to install windows xp in your new laptop. This BSOD (Blue Screen Of Death) is due to the fact that your Windows XP does not have the SATA drivers which is required to detect your Hard Disk Drives. The solution to this is to integrate SATA drivers to your winxp CD, the following steps will let you do it.
If you don’t have Floppy Disk Drive especially on a notebook. You still can install Win Xp by Slip streaming SATA driver into WinXp boot cd using nLite.
Materials needed:
1) nLite(download here), a free tool to help you slipstreaming(integrate) your SATA drivers into WinXp installation disk.
2) Extract SATA drivers (Please see the corresponding Laptop models for SATA drivers )
(if you are using Intel chipset Intel 82801GR/GH, 631xESB/632xESB, 82801GHM, ICH8R/ICH9R, 82801HEM SATA RAID Controller, get the drivers from here)
Steps:
1) Get your Windows XP installation disk and copy the contents to a new folder(I named it “WinXp”).
2) Extract the SATA drivers you downloaded into a folder
3) Run nLite->choose “Next”.

4) Now, locate the Windows folder(for me, it’s “WinXp”).
5) Next again and you will come to “Presets”. Ignore this by choosing “Next” again. 6) In “Task Selection”, choose “Drivers” and “Bootable ISO” by high-lighting them. 7) Choose “Insert”->”Single driver” Browse to the SATA driver folder and select either one of the .INF file, I choose “iaahci.inf”. 9) A screen like below will pop-up, make sure it’s “Textmode driver” ( This is the most important step ) and select all of them by holding CTRL+A key and choose “OK” 10) You shall see something like this. Choose “Next” and you will be prompted. 11) Choose “Yes” to start the process. 12) Let it finish and choose “Next”. 13) Finally, you can create your project as ISO image or burn it directly to CD-R under “Mode”. I choose “Direct Burn”. You can put anything for “Label” but not too long. Choose “Burn” and you will be prompted again. 14) Choose “Yes” to burn it to CD-R. Wait for it to finish and choose “Next”
15) Choose “Finish” to exit nLite.
Thats all You can now boot your PC or laptop with this CD and install Windows Xp with out Blue screen showing.

Adobe snaps to attention over security vulnerabilities

Adobe Systems, whose applications have been hit hard by hackers, is combing through legacy code for bugs in its products and plans a regular quarterly patch release, according to a top security official.

The move comes after Adobe noticed "significant changes in the threat landscape," said Brad Arkin, director for product security and privacy at the company, on Wednesday.

Adobe plans to issue patches every three months on the second Tuesday of the month, the same day that Microsoft releases its patches, Arkin said. Releasing patches in tandem with Microsoft is easier for administrators, who can test the fixes from both companies at the same time before updating desktop PC images.

Adobe's Reader and Acrobat software are used for creating and reading PDF files, which is the widely used format for saving Web pages, creating forms, and other uses.

The programs also use JavaScript, a programming language that, if not implemented correctly, can allow hackers to create PDFs that trigger, for example, a memory corruption problem that can allow for complete control of a computer and all of its data.

Adobe has had a security development lifecycle -- a set of protocols for dealing with problems -- for at least four years. But as Adobe has developed Reader and Acrobat, the company didn't review the old legacy code for security vulnerabilities, Arkin said. It is doing that now.

Since February, Adobe has been hardening its code in its applications, Arkin said. That has included doing automated as well as human code reviews. Adobe is using "fuzzers," or tools that try to inject code into an application to see if it accepts data it shouldn't.

Adobe's engineers are also practicing "threat modeling," where engineers try to figure out areas where hackers could potentially cause mischief and find flaws in source code, Arkin said.

Adobe wants to speed up the time it takes to create a patch when a vulnerability is disclosed, Arkin said. It took Adobe two weeks to come up with a patch for the JBIG2 vulnerability revealed around the end of April. That "wasn't as fast as we'd have liked it to be," he said.

Arkin said Adobe plans to have its first quarterly patch update release within the next three to four months, although the exact date hasn't been set.

The intensive security review plans will be nearly permanent. "We don't think we're going to hit a point where it's done," Arkin said. "No product is going to be completely free of vulnerabilites."

Wi-Fi hikes security by adding to WPA2 requirements

The Wi-Fi Alliance has expanded its WPA2 certification program to include a tool for secure handoffs between Wi-Fi and 3G networks, as well as an authentication system that uses multiple secured tunnels.

WPA2 (Wi-Fi Protected Access 2) is the most advanced security standard for Wi-Fi. The WPA2 certification program already included five other EAP (extensible authentication protocol) methods. The Wi-Fi Alliance tests routers, access points, and client devices for interoperability using certain protocols and certifies them with its logo.

The newly added protocols, EAP-AKA (Authentication and Key Agreement) and EAP-FAST (Flexible Authentication via Secure Tunneling), are designed to better secure enterprise Wi-Fi LANs.

EAP-AKA was developed by the 3GPP (Third-Generation Partnership Project), the main standards body for 3G networks, and has been in use for a few years on both UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) and CDMA2000 (Code-Division Multiple Access) networks. It allows for the handoff of calls between cellular and Wi-Fi networks using a single user identifier. As more mobile phones are equipped with Wi-Fi and more laptops and netbooks gain cellular data capability, having a standard way to shift calls from paid carrier networks to free Wi-Fi could be valuable, especially in enterprises that have rolled out Wi-Fi across their offices.

Cisco Systems created EAP-FAST several years ago as a replacement for its LEAP (Lightweight EAP), which was found to be vulnerable to certain types of attacks. Those included "dictionary" attacks, so-called because they generate a series of likely guesses at the network's decryption key or passphrase. EAP-FAST is now an open international standard.

For the next 90 days, support for the two newly added EAP types will be optional in WPA2-certified products, said Edgar Figueroa, executive director of the Wi-Fi Alliance. After that, WPA2 certification will require support for all seven EAP types, except in certain special cases. Any product that gets a firmware upgrade after the grace period will have to be re-certified under the new requirements, Figueroa said.

Cisco Nexus 5000 bridges the network gap

Traditionally, network transport has run on two separate technologies, FC (Fibre Channel) and Ethernet, which, like two railroads with different gauges, seemed bound to never meet.

Just about everybody agrees that having a unified network could bring significant financial and administrative benefits, but when exploring possible simplifications to the datacenter fabric, customers faced discouraging and costly options such as tearing down their FC investments or extending the FC network to reach every server and every application.

2008 started with industry signals that it would be the year when those two "railroads" would finally come together. We had a first glimpse that things were changing in that space when Brocade announced the DCX in January. Later that winter a new technology, FCoE (Fibre Channel over Ethernet) -- created by an offspring of Cisco, Nuova Systems -- came to maturity in the Nexus 5000 switches, promising to finally bring these two most critical networks under the same administrative banner.

This spring, about one year after first introducing the concept of FCoE, Cisco announced the Nexus 5000, a 10G Ethernet switch that supports the new protocol and promises to make consolidating FC and Ethernet traffic as easy and as reliable as bringing together Ethernet connections with different speeds on the same switch.

How do the approaches from Brocade and Cisco differ? I won’t stretch that rail analogy further than this, but it helps if you think of the first as a converging point for different railroads, and see the second as a unified rail where to roll heterogeneous transports.

In fact, FCoE brings seamlessly together the two protocols, potentially reaching any application server mounting a new breed of adapters, aptly name converged network adapters or CNA. A CNA essentially carries both protocols, Ethernet and FC on a single 10G port, which cuts in half the number of server adapters needed and, just as important, reduces significantly the number of connections and switches needed south of the servers.

The other important component of the FCoE architecture is obviously the Nexus 5000 switch, a device that essentially bridges the FC and Ethernet networks using compatible ports for each technology. Moreover, adding an FCoE switch requires minimal modifications, if any, to the existing storage fabric, which should grab the interest of customers and other vendors.

Cisco declares for the first model released, the Nexus 5020, an aggregate speed in excess of 1Tbit/sec and negligible latency. This, together with an impressive lineout of 10G ports, makes the switch a desirable machine to have when implementing server virtualization. To paraphrase what a Cisco executive said, perhaps a bit paradoxically, with FCoE you can burden a server with just about any traffic load.

Getting to the nexus of the 5000
A switch that promises to deliver the services of Ethernet and FC over the same wire without packet losses and without appreciable latency is certainly worth reviewing, but it didn’t take me long to realize that the evaluation required bringing together more equipment than it’s convenient to ship, which is why I ran my battery of tests at the Nuova Systems premises in San Jose, Calif.

In addition to 10G Ethernet ports, my test unit mounted some native FC ports, which made possible running tests to evaluate its behavior when emulating a native FC switch. Other items in my test plan were exploring the management features of the Nexus 5000 and running performance benchmarks to measure latency, I/O operations, and data rate.

The Nexus 5020 is a 2U rack mounted unit and packs in that small space an astonishing number of sockets: 40 to be precise. Each socket can host Ethernet ports running at 10G. Using an optional expansion module (the switch has room for two), you can extend connectivity with six more 10G Ethernet ports, eight more FC ports, or a combo module with four FC and four 10G Ethernet ports.

However, those sockets don’t need to be completely filled. For example, my test unit had only 15 10G ports and 4 FC ports active. At review time the Nexus 5000 offered support for all FC connectivity speeds, up to but not including 8G.

Typically, you would deploy the 5020 in the same rack where your app servers reside, or in an adjacent rack. Considering a resilient configuration with two 10G connections for each server, two Nexus 5000 can connect up 40 servers and still have room for more ports with the expansion modules.

The front of the 5000 hosts five large, always spinning and rather noisy fans. With only one power supply (a configuration with dual PSU is also available) I measured around 465 watts absorbed by the switch. Interestingly, the Nexus kept running when I removed one of the fans but, as I had been warned, shut down automatically when I removed a second fan. However, the remaining three fans kept spinning to keep the internal electronics cool.

When reinserted, the two fans I had removed began spinning immediately, but the rest of the system was still no go and I had to power cycle to restart. Taking advantage of this behavior (it’s by design), I measured 243 watts with only the five fans spinning, which suggests that the power usage of the other components of the switch is the delta to 465 watts, at least in my configuration.

Having more connections would obviously push up that number, but the consumption I measured seems to be in the same ballpark of what I read from the specs of 20 ports 10G switches from other vendors.

Policing with a policy
Obviously, the most important novelty that the Nexus 5000 brings to a datacenter and the greatest differentiator with other, single protocol switches is that Ethernet and FC are just two supported applications that you monitor and control from the same administrative interface.

With that in mind it’s easy to understand why the Nexus runs a new OS, the NX-OS, which, according to Cisco, inherits and brings together the best features of their Ethernet-focused IOS and their FC focused SAN-OS.

To access the OS features administrators can choose between a powerful CLI or the GUI-based Fabric Manager. I used the plural because the administrative tasks of the switch can be easily divided between multiple roles, each with a different login and confined to a specific environment, as defined by and under the supervision of a super admin. That’s a critical and much-needed option if you plan to bring multiple administrative domains and their administrators under the same banner.

This and other configuration setting of the Nexus 5000 are policy-driven, which makes for easy and transparent management. Another remarkable feature is that you can define classes of service that logically isolate different applications.

For example, after logging in to the switch, a simple command such as "sh policy-map interface Ethernet 1/1" listed all traffic statistics on that port, grouped for each CoS (class of service) and listing separated numbers for inbound and outbound packets.

Combining a certain CoS with a proper policy, an admin can not only monitor what traffic is running on the switch but can also automatically control where packets are routed and how. Load balancing is a typical application where that combination of policy and QoS shines, but there are others -- for example, automatically assigning packets with different MTU to different classes of traffic.

The NX-OS makes easy some otherwise challenging settings, such as mirroring the traffic flowing on one interface to another on the same or on a different VLAN. A similar setting can be useful for sensitive applications such as surveillance and remote monitoring, but can also help test the impact of a new application on a production VLAN.

Defining a correct policy can help also make sure that FC traffic, or any other traffic running on the 5000, will never drop a frame. Dropping a frame is obviously a mortal sin if a storage device is at one end of the connection, but other performance-sensitive applications can benefit from uninterrupted transport.

I was surprised to learn how easy that was to set up with just a handful of commands:

In plain English this means the following: Never drop a frame and pause the traffic if you can’t keep up with the rate.

I should also mention that PFC stands for priority flow control, a new feature which is at the heart of the FCoE protocol and essentially makes Ethernet able to survive traffic congestion without data loss, by pausing the incoming flow of packets when needed.

My next command, a line that I am not showing, was to assign that policy to two ports on my switch.

How to fill up a 10G line
If setting that policy up was easy, testing that it was actually working was a bit more complicated and called for using the powerful features of IP Performance Tester, a traffic generator system by Ixia. One of the problems I had to solve was how to create significant traffic on my 10G connections, which is where IP Performance Tester, luckily already installed in my test system, was called to action. This isn't the only test where I've used IP Performance Tester, and I've found it to be a valuable tool.

For my PFC test, the Ixia system was set to generate enough traffic to cause a level of congestion which would have translated, without PFC, into losing packets. The switch under test passed this test with aplomb and without losses, proving that not only FC but also Ethernet can be a reliable, lossless protocol.

Of the many test scripts I ran on the Nexus 5000 this was, without any doubt, the most significant. The switch offers many powerful features, including guaranteed rate of traffic, automatic bandwidth management, and automated traffic span.

However, PFC is what legitimates FCoE as a viable convergence protocol that can bridge the gap between application servers and storage, and it makes the Nexus 5000 a much-needed component in datacenter consolidation projects.

One last question remained still unanswered in my evaluation: The Nexus 5000 had proven to have the features needed to be the connection point between servers and storage in a unified environment, but did the machine have enough bandwidth and responsiveness for the job?

To answer those I moved the testing to a different setting where the Nexus 5020 was connected to 8 hosts running NetPipe.

NetPipe is a remarkable performance benchmark tool that works particularly well with switches because you can measure end-to-end (host-to-host) performance and record (in Excel-compatible format) how those results vary when using different data transfers sizes.

A summary of what you can do with NetPipe is shown in the figure here (screen image).

In essence you can set NetPipe to use one way or bidirectional data transfers and increase the data transfer size gradually within a range., recording the transfer rate in megabytes per second and the latency in microseconds..

I ran my tests with a data size range from 1 byte to 8,198 bytes, but for clarity I am not listing the whole range of results but only a few, following a power of two pattern.

Also to mimic a more realistic working condition, I ran the same tests first without any other traffic on the switch and then added one and two competing flows of traffic.

Finally, to have a better feeling of how much the switch impacts transfer rate and latency, I ran the same test back to back, in essence replacing the switch with a direct connection between the two hosts.

It’s interesting to note how the transfer rate increases gradually with higher data size reaching numbers very close to the theoretical capacity of 10G Ethernet.

The latency numbers, where lower is better, is obviously the most important proof of the switch responsiveness. Even if we consider the best results where the Nexus 5020 is in the path, the delta with the back-to back stays between 3 and 3.5 microseconds, which is essentially the latency added by the switch.

This number is not only very close to what Cisco suggests for the 5020 , but is probably the shortest latency that you can put between your applications and your data.

A step for network consolidation
When reviewing products such as the Nexus 5000 that bear the first implementation of an innovative technology is often difficult to maintain judgments about of the technology separated from that about the solution. Which is probably why, at the end of my evaluation, I tend to think of the Nexus 5020 and of FCoE as a whole -- which they are, because at the moment there is no other switch that let you implement the new protocol.

However, even if I break apart the two, each piece has merits of its own. I like the unified view that FCoE brings to network transport and I like the speed and feather-light impact that the Nexus 5020 brings to that union.

Obviously the Nexus 5000 is a first version product and however well rounded, it’s easy to predict that future versions will move up the bar even further. As for the technology, perhaps the greatest endorsement that FCoE received is that Brocade is planning to ship a Nexus 5000 rival solution, based on FCoE by year's end. Obviously the old “if you can’t beat them, join them” battle cry of competition is still alive and well in the storage world.

Microsoft NAP: NAC for the rest of us?

The universe of policy-based networking and systems management has evolved over the past few years, and the standards first created by the Trusted Computing Group, Cisco, and Microsoft have merged to create a generalized view of managing and enforcing policy. Although more capable and more polished solutions are available, Microsoft's Network Access Protection (NAP) will undoubtedly be the primary such technology in use in all-Windows environments, even with its limitations.

NAP comprises client and server subsystems with an enforcement architecture based on 802.1X, DHCP, or VPNs together with VLAN assignment within the network to isolate devices when appropriate. NAP services are provided in Windows Server 2008, with Windows Server 2008 R2 adding a few capabilities to the NAP support.

Client support is included in Windows Vista, Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3), and the Windows 7 Release Candidate. These client services provide posture gathering and reporting to Windows Server 2008 for enforcement and remediation decisions. The NAP components include the posture of the device in a way similar to Windows Security Center, with system update, anti-virus, firewall, and other security status reported back.

The NAP services then analyze the overall posture of each device, match that posture to the NAP policies in the Network Policy Server (NPS), and facilitate enforcement as outlined by those policies. NAP provides roughly the same access control services as third-party NAC solutions we've tested, but without many of the bells and whistles those solutions provide.

NAP in R2
Microsoft continues to develop new features for NAP and related security functions. A number of the improvements in Windows Server 2008 R2 make NAP deployment smoother: specifically the automated setup of the logging database, and multiple out-of-the-box configurations for the System Health Validator (SHV).

NAP requires the setup of multiple databases for administration and management of the overall system, one of which is the logging database. Prior to Windows Server 2008 R2, the logging database required extensive SQL-based configuration. This setup has been automated in R2, completely relieving the administrator of an onerous task.

Similarly, prior to R2, Windows Server 2008 provided only one SHV configuration, meaning that wholesale changes to the system health requirements had to be made universally. Now you can apply different policies based on a specific configuration of the SHV. For example, systems internal to your network may require that only the anti-virus component is current, while systems connected via VPN may require both anti-virus and antispyware be active.

In addition, when used with Windows 7, R2 provides a streamlined remote access facility, simplifying remote connectivity and securing Remote Workspace, Presentation Virtualization, and Remote Desktop Services Gateway sessions.

NAP in the lab
As for previous reviews (see "NAC smorgasbord: Four ways to police the nework" and "Sophos NAC is a good start"), we examined NAP's ability to handle typical scenarios, including guest access, rogue devices, and non-Windows devices. We also examined the enforcement methods available natively with NAP. We installed Windows Server 2008 as the network core and configured both Windows Vista and Windows XP SP3 devices on the network. Our network also included a Mac OS X client and a printer, though NAP does nothing with non-Windows devices. It only tests the posture, or "health status," of Windows systems.

While configuring NAP was straightforward, it was also complex, requiring a long list of supporting services to be installed and configured. Even my simple deployment required several hours to configure, due to the prerequisites for 802.1X on Windows Server 2008, including the RADIUS server, certificates, and the enforcement clients.

You use the Network Policy Server, a component of Windows Server 2008, to configure NAP policies. As with other NAC solutions, the policies use the client posture to determine the arguments for a policy decision. The policy then triggers enforcement in terms of network access granted. Enforcement of the client status is by 802.1X and VLAN assignment or by DHCP lease enforcement.

Policy configuration is simple due to its limited scope. For example, policies can only take into account device posture, without the per-port, time of day, and other fine-grained controls available in other systems. In short, NAP checks the status of anti-virus software, antispyware software, a firewall, and automatic updating.

Although the NAP platform is the same for both Windows XP and Windows Vista, Vista offers a few additional capabilities. Vista provides an administration console for local and Group Policy configuration, and the Windows System Health Agent (the built-in "client" piece of NAP) takes advantage of Windows Defender support in the Security Center. Plus, the underlying enforcement technologies include some advanced features, such as authenticated IP for IPSec and single-sign-on support for 802.1X.

Secure or obscure
Client devices are assigned to a VLAN based on their posture, so they may, for instance, be restricted to accessing remediation servers, the Internet, or other limited resources until they are corrected. VLAN assignment is a more secure approach than DHCP leases, but requires the complexity of an 802.1X implementation, which is often onerous for an entire organization.

DHCP enforcement is a mixed bag. By using IP address assignment to move devices around a network, you can expect safe devices to be compliant to your plan -- and rogues to find ways to apply static IP addressing to get around it. Many are likely to be tempted by the relative simplicity of DHCP-based enforcement, especially for smaller deployments, but it is simply the latest version of "security by obscurity," and therefore no security at all.

Given the sophistication and depth of knowledge exhibited by the malevolent organizations responsible for most malware being developed and deployed today, it should be no surprise that they are able to manipulate IP addresses in order to avoid the IP-assignment enforcement mechanism (not only used by NAP, but also other network access control solutions). True enforcement must leverage the network infrastructure, and therefore requires 802.1X for organizations using NAP. To add injury to insult, 802.1X has proven challenging to define and deploy, even with the aid of excellent companion software such as Cloudpath Networks' XpressConnect and Great Bay Software's Beacon (see "Accelerate your 802.1X rollout").

The NAP gap
Microsoft NAP is likely to be an integral part of your policy-based network, whether or not you deploy a pure NAP solution. Although the software is included with Windows Server 2008, Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows XP SP3, the costs of an implementation also include the deployment of 802.1X and VLAN assignment -- or an understanding and acceptance of the limitations of DHCP enforcement.

As is often the case, NAP misses one of the keys to creating a manageable environment, using logging instead of full-fledged reporting to provide information about the environment. Although the information is available, it is difficult to extract and to see anomalies as they occur.

If you are managing a 100 percent Windows environment, NAP could possibly provide the core of your policy-based administration. In the more likely event you're managing a heterogeneous environment with BlackBerrys, Macs, iPhones, printers, and other devices, there's a much higher probability -- due to the need of both additional features and much more robust reporting -- NAP will serve as an integral part of a more complete solution.

Google suffers another service outage

Google is dealing with another service outage Monday impacting users around the world. Monday's service outage, which began at approximately 8:30 a.m. EDT, appears to be impacting only Google's popular Google News service. As of this writing (9:44 a.m. EDT) it has not been fully resolved and when people try to access Google News they are met with a "503 Server Error" message and a "Please try again in 30 seconds. Others can access Google News, but the site is not displaying pages correctly or when links to other Google News categories are clicked on more Server Error messages are delivered.

The outage has been reported by users in California and Massachusetts and as far away as Sydney, Australia, India, and the United Kingdom. Twitter is also lighting up with users complaining of the outage.

There are no reported problems of Google News in some parts of the world such as Tel Aviv, Israel. Other Google services, such as Google.com, Gmail, and YouTube appear to be working fine. This latest hiccup by Google does in no way appear to be as severe or as a widespread as Google's service outage earlier this month. However this latest Google stumble tarnishes, yet again, the company's image as one of the most reliable Internet companies.

Cisco unveils a grab bag of wireless LAN products

Cisco unveiled a grab bag of wireless LAN announcements at Interop Tuesday, including much of what you'd expect in the form of new hardware. But there's a somewhat surprising twist: The equipment vendor's wide-ranging emphasis on software applications.

The announcements include a new mesh access point, the high-end 5500 WLAN controller, a low-end version of its Mobility Services Engine, and a more flexible licensing model for its gear. There's also an improvement to its access point-based M-Drive code to in effect lock 802.11a clients into the 5GHz band. Cisco also extensively redesigned the GUI for its Wireless Control System, the application for managing its WLANs.

There's also an updated version of Cisco's WebEx desktop and phone conferencing application client for the Apple iPhone. Cisco will add video support over Wi-Fi later this year. And three new software vendors -- ArcSight, NetScout and RSA -- are now supporting the Cisco API through the Mobility Services Engine to add new security and management features for WLAN administrators.

Another change makes it easier and faster for third-party device makers to use the Cisco Compatible Extensions (CCX) code to marry their products with a Cisco WLAN.

"Most of the news is just Wi-Fi related,” says Paul DeBeasi, senior analyst for wireless and mobility with Burton Group. "But the most interesting piece is what they're doing with applications. The Mobility Services Engine was a classic, big company 'what the heck are they announcing' announcement. It was a skeleton that they're now fleshing out.”

The MSE is collects a wide range of WLAN data from Cisco controllers and access points, and it hosts or connects with applications from Cisco and third-party vendors that can make use of the data. OfficeExtend: Optional software, loaded on Cisco Aironet 1130 and 1140 access points that are linked to a WAN connection. OfficeExtend connects securely with a central 5500 controller and downloads and enforces a range of enterprise security and management policies for mobile workers and teleworkers. License is $75 per access point.
Mobility Services Engine 3310: A lower-end model to the companion 3350 model, the new MSE is aimed at midsize businesses. It's an appliance that runs software programs to collect, store and manage data from wireless clients and Cisco access points and controllers. The MSE can use this data itself for jobs like rogue radio detection, and share it with either higher-end Cisco network applications or with third-party applications, such as wireless asset tracking, and RFID data management. Each Wii system has a 16 digit code, for the system itself. The wii console code is used to send messages to your friends.

Each game that uses the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection generates a unique 12 digit friend code that can be exchanged with friends and be used to maintain individual friend lists in each game. The Text

Open up a new document and create a nice background. I used MickM-green which is really turning into a trademarked green. I love it. It's not even a real color, but more and more people start to use it.

Anyhow, just make sure your document is large enough. I used 500px x 400px.

Now, on a new layer, create some text. But instead of writing the entire word on one layer, place all different letters on different layers.

I started with the M of the word "MickM". Make sure your font is nice enough to work with. With nice I mean that font needs to be thick enough. Too thin fonts will look a bit weird. Also make sure they're all black.

Because you're using different layers, you can always play with Ctrl+T to enlarge or scale the letters if needed. If you're done, you should have a few layers with every letter on another layer.

Making it look 3D

Now, on every letter add the same layer-style. What we're gonna do is add a white outer stroke that can deviate between 3px or 5px depending on the size of your font. Then add a gradient overlay and set this to SCREEN and lower the opacity of the overlay to 20%.

If you add this layer-style to one of the layers, and then right-click the layer and select "Copy Layer-Style", you can right-click every layer and choose "Paste Layer-Style". Or, if you have a lot of letters, select all layers and then paste it.

Now hide all but one layer to work on. Select your Move-Tool and while holding ALT press UP and LEFT one at a time. (LEFT, UP, LEFT, UP, LEFT, UP, etc) ...untill your letter looks like it's 3d.

Then select all the layers except the top-layer and merge them together by Ctrl+E.

Once merged, press Ctrl+U and drag the lower slider to the left a little to make the 3d-part of your letter a little darker to make it look like the lighting is giving it that extra touch.
When you're done, merge those 2 layers together as well!

Continue repeating this step but every time, use different angles. (Left, Left, Left, etc) or (Right, Bottom, Rightm, Bottom, etc). Anything goes. Also make sure that you merge all the seperate layers. So now you should have the amount of layers you had at the beginning again!

Now move the layers around, displace them, order them the way you like it and just make sure the letters are placed the way you like it.

Not much I can teach you about that! I chose to let my letters overlap each other a bit. As you can see the outer letters are in the back, then come the inner letters, and the middle letter is the closest letter if, let's say, the letters are placed on a table in front of you.

Now merge all those letters together! Then Ctrl+click on the thumbnail of the layer to select it and you'll notice you will get a selection around it.

Cool 3D Text

Then add a very soft White>Transparent gradient to a new layer and lower the opacity of it to 2%-10%. Then add a very small and soft white inner glow to the entire name or word.

Now add a large, but very soft outer glow in white to the text. Set the blending-mode to Overlay and the opacity around 40%.

With a soft brush (45px) brush, on a new layer, while holding Shift a small straight line underneath the text. It should not cover the entire area underneath the text though.

Go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur and set it to 20-30. Then go to Filter>Blur>Motion Blur and set it to an amount so that the shadow covers the entire area underneath your text. Then just lower the opacity to 20-40.

On a new layer above all of it, grab a small brush around 1px-3px and use a very bright and noticable color to draw small strokes on places where we want some shine. I used red, because it's a color I haven't used in the entire image, so easy noticable.

Press Ctrl+U and drag the lower slider all the way to the right to make the lines all white. Now go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur and leave the settings or play around with them if you want more or less shine.

I chose to leave them as they were!

You can use this technique any way you want. You can also choose to make all the angles of the letters look the same way to make them all look the same, but if you want a more playfull composition like this one, you can add some difference to make it look cooler!

Step 1 - Setting Up Background:

Create a document of size 750x550 pixels.

Choose a Krako's Texture 6 and resize it to fit into the working area.

Step 2a - Adding Base Colors:

Create a new layer and name it as Base Color 1.

Set your foreground color to #8A0504. Using a Soft Brush tool with size 400, paint a huge dot on the right of the document.

Set the Blend Mode of this layer to Overlay.

Step 2b - Adding Base Colors:

Create another layer and name it as Base Color 2.

Set your foreground color to #F38F00 and repeat what you have done in Step 2a.

Set the Blend Mode of this layer to Overlay.

Step 3a - Adding 3D Render:

Open up omjpack4r2.png of the Render Pack downloaded earlier.

Drag the shape into the document and position it the way seen in the diagram.

Set the Blend Mode of this layer to Soft Light.

Step 3b - Adding 3D Render:

Drag the same shape into the document again.

Reduce the size and move it to the bottom right so it looks like those 'blades' are emerging from there.

Step 4a - Abstract Details:

Load the 2 brushes, Darius and Life.

Create a new layer below the 3D render and name it as Black Shapes.

Set the foreground color to #000000. Select any the brushes in these 2 sets and paint them in any place you want it. Set the Blend Mode of this layer to Overlay once you are done.

Step 4b - Abstract Details:

Create a new layer above Black Shapes and call it as White Shapes.

Set the foreground color to #FFFFFF and repeat Step 4a with other brushes. Set the Blend Mode of this layer to Soft Light once you are done.

Step 4c - Abstract Details:

Load Vector Linedots brush.

Create a new layer above Black and White Shapes layer. Repeat similar methods done in Step 4a and 4b.

Step 4d - Abstract Details:

Load 10 Scan Lines brush.

Create a new layer below the lines and dots. Select Scaners7 and paint it with #FFFFFF.

Step 5 - Adding Bitmap Texts:

Type in some texts with small sizes, around 6-8 points to complete the design. They can be of any colors as long as it fits the overall scheme.

As I prefer the whole thing to be lighter and of less contrast, I created a Levels Adjustment Layer above everything with values, 3, 1.56, 255 to brighten the art a little.

My Deviation:

With the same methods, I decide to try out another design with selections of much lighter colors.

The basic techniques used are exactly the same as those mentioned above.

Great Looking 3D Box

Step 1

Create a new document and start by drawing a 3d box like the picture below and you should end up with the final image.. Dont worry about gaps as this adds to the effect later on.

Click here to download a textured image and drag it on to this and press Ctrl and T and then scale it down and press right click on the mouse and goto Distort and distort it to the image as shown below.

Step 3

Now grab the brush tool and set the forground colour as 341203, now create a new layor and draw where the white lines you have missed are like the picture below.

Now put that layer to the bottom so you get a nice effect.

Step 4

Keeping with the brush create a new layer making sure that the new layer is above everthing. Now set the brush opacity to only 20% and keeping with the same brown colour start to draw shadows on the edges of the box untill you have a showing effect like the picture below.

Click here to download the background. Now drag it to thedocument which will automatically give you a new layer. Making sure its the top layer, make the opacity to 50% and press P which is the Pen Tool and draw round the box and making sure you draw round a few grass petals so you can get the effect that its lying in grass. Now press the right click on the mouse and click Make Selection and click ok. Once you have done that just press delete on the keypad. You should have an image like the one below.

Now bring the opacity to 100% again and you should have something like the image below.

Step 6

On the layer you just did Ctrl and click the image in the layer image and the create a new layer. Grab the gradient tool and set the forground colour to 070636 and making sure that it is set the background colour to transparent which is at the top of the screen. drag from top left corner to near the box, then from other corner to box and a few from the middle top to box untill you have the look as below.

Final Step

Ok create a new layer and write some text within the box. Use the layer setting below and you have then finished.

1. Let's start out by creating a new file. We will be creating a 3D text effect with special smoke. I used a 800x300 pixels canvas set at 72dpi, and I filled my background with a black color. Then make a new layer set and name it 'text design'.

2. Now select the horizontal type tool then set the font family to arial black, regular, 80 pt, smooth and white color. In a new text layer type your name.

3. Under layer style (layer - layer style) add a drop shadow, inner shadow, inner glow and gradient overlay blending options to your name text layer.

4. In a new text layer type your name with white color right on the first name. Then nudge it up by 3 pixels.

5. Under layer style (layer - layer style) add a drop shadow and inner shadow blending options to your white colored text layer. Then set the layer's blending mode to Darken at 68 % opacity level.

6. Duplicate your 'text design' layer set then go to (layer - merge layer set), the layer set should turn into a regular layer. Now place the second text design behind the 'text design' layer set on the layers window and nudge it down to create a 3D effect.

7. Under layer style (layer - layer style) add an inner shadow blending option to the second text design layer.

8. Now for the special smoke, first add a marquee selection around your name. Then go to (edit - copy merged) and paste.

9. Now go to (filter - distort - wave) and apply the settings below to your name design layer from step 7. If you don't like the result with the settings provided you can keep on applying the same filter until you get the same results.

10. Once you have a smoke design that your satisfied with you can go ahead and scale it down so its the same size as your text. Then finish it off with more smoke design on the rest of your name.

And there you go, this was a long tutorial but it's finally finished! A new 3D Text effect with special smoke has been created, have fun with it!

Ozone hole grows in 2008

The hole is a thinning area in the ozone layer over Antarctica and the size of the hole varies every year depending on weather conditions.

This year, the size of the thinned area reached about 27 million square kilometers (10.4 million square miles), compared to 25 million square kilometers (9.65 million square miles) in 2007.

In 2006, the hole was a record 29 million square kilometers (11.2 million square miles), larger than North America, the ESA said.

The ESA announced its results based on information from German and Dutch researchers who analyzed satellite data.

Depletion of ozone is caused by extreme cold temperatures at high altitude and the presence of ozone-destroying gases, such as chlorine and bromine, in the atmosphere, the ESA said.

Those gases originate from man-made products like chlorofluorocarbons, or CFCs, which were phased out under a global agreement two decades ago but continue to linger in the atmosphere.

Ozone is a protective atmospheric layer found at an altitude of about 25 kilometers (15.5 miles).

With the trend of getting slimmer, mean machines are shedding their flab. The trend was initiated by Apple MacBook Air, a product that garnered accolades from market and consumers. The product started a new segment in laptop category and wooed vendors to jump into the new yet more appealing market segment.

The article will list few of the thinnest and light weight laptops in the market:

1. Apple MacBook Air: Award winning product designed by Apple weighing just 1.36kgs, made a stunning entry into laptop segment. The laptop was launched earlier this year with 0.16-0.76” statistics. To entice the users, company has launched the device in multiple shades Quartz Pink, Regatta Blue and Regal Red. Powered by 1.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor the laptop has a capacity of 5GB of RAM. The notebook comes packed with WiMax and GPS. The company has also introduced its variant E4300 which has Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS support.

4. Samsung X360: This is the most latest and recent entry to the thin laptop segment. The Korean manufacturer has forayed the segment with its X360, claiming it the world’s thinnest laptop. It weighs 1.27kgs and has 13.3” LCD screen. Symbian mobile phones evolve - the Nokia N96 and 5800 Xpress

77 million Symbian mobile phones were sold in 2007. That figure should be vastly increased over the next few months, as two phones will be taking it to new heights: the Nokia 5800 Xpress, and the mind-blowing Nokia N96.

Nokia and Symbian - long-time bedfellows

In truth, Nokia have a long history of using Symbian in their mobile phones, going all the way back, in fact, to their first camera phone, the 7650 (a huge beastie of a thing it was, too!). Some of the most powerful Nokia mobile phones ever made have run on Symbian, quite often using the patented Series 60 interface. In fact, it's fair to say that Series 60 is the most important version of Symbian, since it's the one that powers Nokia's top of the range mobile phones: the prestigious, world-renowned Nseries. Windows Error Fix:Stop Error “Stop 0×24 - NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM” with BSOD

This BSOD 0×24 is called as “NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM” and this error normally occurs in Windows Vista or in Windows XP computer systems due to hard disk drive problem's. This Windows stop error indicates a problem occurred in ntfs.sys, the driver file that allows the system to read and write to NTFS drives. Corruption in the NTFS file system or bad blocks (sectors) on the hard disk drive can induce this particular stop error. Corrupted SCSI and IDE drivers can also adversely affect the system's ability to read and write to disk, thus causing this stop error.

Another possible cause of this “NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM” stop error is the depletion of nonpaged pool memory. If the nonpaged pool memory is completely depleted, this error can stop the system. However, during the indexing process, if the amount of available nonpaged pool memory is very low, another kernel-mode driver requiring nonpaged pool memory can also trigger this stop error in Windows based computer systems.

To resolve a disk corruption problem:

Check Event Viewer for error messages from SCSI and FASTFAT (System Log) or Autochk (Application Log) that might help pinpoint the device or driver that is causing the error. Try disabling any virus scanners, backup programs, or disk defragmenter tools that continually monitor the Windows based computer system. You should also run hardware diagnostics supplied by the system manufacturer. For details on these procedures, see the owner's manual for your computer. Run Chkdsk /f /r to detect and resolve any file system structural corruption. You must restart the system before the disk scan begins on a system partition.The steps for this is given:

Insert and boot from your Windows Vista DVD or XP CD
Select the Repair option from the opened menu.
Press the number that corresponds to the correct location for the installation of Windows you want to repair. Typically this will be #1
Enter in the administrator password when requested
Now type chkdsk /r
After that command is completed restart your system and check. if the issue still exist then format and reinstall the operating system.

To resolve a nonpaged pool memory depletion problem:

Either add new physical memory to the Windows based computer (thus increasing the quantity of nonpaged pool memory available to the kernel), or reduce the number of files on the Services for Macintosh (SFM) volume.

Fix a Non Booting Windows Vista Installation

NOTE: Be sure to unplug all un-necessary USB devices (everything except mouse/keyboard) before attempting any of these steps, as crazy as it sounds many people can not get the Windows Vista install CD to recognize their Windows install to repair it unless USB devices are unplugged. Don’t ask me why. Now you’ve unplugged them haven’t you? You better have. Great, lets go.

Go ahead and get out that Windows Vista Boot disk that you have, insert it into your CD drive and then turn on your computer. Hold down “F12″ while booting to open up your “Boot To” menu prompt. Select “CD-ROM” and then continue by pressing enter. Now depending on several random factors Windows Vista could take almost a full 10 minutes to get to the point where it shows its install screen. But seeing as tutorials work outside the constraints of time, let’s just assume you are already there. First you will see a screen that has some time/region info on it, go ahead and click the next button. Now instead of clicking the big shiny button in the middle, go ahead and click down at the bottom left hand side that says, “Repair your computer”. Now you should see an old Windows 95 stylistic menu and a list of all the operating systems the install disk detects. If your list is empty, try waiting a few moments or removing all but your master hard-drive. And if that fails, just go ahead and hit next anyway. Now highlight your Windows Vista OS and click Next. Now it should start up automatic recovery at this point and most problems can be fixed through this method. But if startup recovery cannot fix the problem go ahead and click on the “Command Prompt” option from the System Recovery Options.

Trick: If you know what your problem is, but just can’t get into an explorer view to delete the files or change a setting, such as compressing your bootmgr ;), at the command prompt just type in “notepad” without prompts and then select File>Open and now you will be in a simple explorer and can make changes as necessary. Back to the original solutions.

Now that you are in the command prompt, type the following commands, pressing enter after each line.

1. bootrec /fixmbr
2. bootrec /rebuildbcd
3. bootrec /fixboot
4. bootrec /scanos
5. chkdsk /r

Windows Error Fix:Windows Installer Appears Every Time Start an Application

The Windows Installer is a global application used to install many Microsoft products, including Office 2000,Office XP and Office 2007, and is even available to third-party developers to include with their programs.

Unfortunately, Windows Installer is fraught with bugs, one of which is its tendency to appear every time you start applications like Microsoft Office (or some other third party software programs) and begin a re-installation or reconfiguration process. All you'll see is the "Please Wait" screen, followed by a progress bar. The problem is related to the This feature will be installed when required option (sometimes called "Install on Demand"), used when installing some applications. In essence, Windows Installer starts to install a "feature" when it is needed, even though it may be already installed.

Unfortunately, but not surprisingly, Microsoft will not acknowledge that there is a serious flaw in their installer software. Here are the solutions we've come up with so far:

Solution 1:

Reinstall the application in question, and don't choose the This feature will be installed when required for any of the optional components.

However, this may not solve the problem (which is the very bug we're talking about). We're currently looking for a way to fix the problem properly, but in the mean time, here's how to turn off the "feature:"

Solution 2

Open the Group Policy Editor by selecting Run from the Start Menu, and typing gpedit.msc. (If the file is missing, run mmc.exe instead. Then, select Add/Remove Snap-in from the Console menu, click Add, and double-click Group Policy. Click Finish, then Close, then Ok.)
Expand the following branches:
Local Computer Policy \ Computer Configuration \ Administrative Templates \ Windows Components \ Windows Installer
Double-click Disable Windows Installer to your right, click Enabled, and choose Always from the list. Click Ok when you're done.
The change will take effect immediately. If you added a snap in, as described above, you don't need to "save changes to the console."
Note: If you encounter an error about the Administrator Policy the next time you try to install an application, you'll have to re-enable the Windows Installer temporarily.

Solution 3 (for Office 2000 only):

Run the Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) from Windows.
Expand the branches to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ Software\ Microsoft\ Office\ 9.0\ Common.
Delete the UserData value on your right, and close the Registry Editor.
The next time you start an Office application, it will ask for your username, but shouldn't bother you again.

To Fix “Black Screen on Resuming Hibernation” on Multiprocessor Computer Running on Windows Vista or Windows XP- KB951126

If you’ve a multiprocessor (32 processors) computer system running Windows Vista or Windows XP, you might have faced problems, when you tries to resume the computer from hibernation (S4), in this scenario, the computer stops responding on a black screen.

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft to fix this issue. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing.

Generally marked with the reference Blue Screen of Death(or BSOD), the stop errors causing the operating system to shut down, or restart the machine in order to prevent damage, and the critical system errors in Windows have reached a status of ubiquity and even managed to spawn derivations such as the Black Screen of Death.

Used in reference with the Reduced Functionality Mode introduced in Windows Vista as a direct result of the Windows Genuine Advantage mechanism detecting a non-genuine copy of the operating system, the Black Screen of Death is in fact a multifaceted labeled which can successfully be used for both Vista SP1 and XP SP3. According to Microsoft, both Vista and XP, updated with SP1 and SP3 respectively, are susceptible under the right configuration to enter into a coma and prevent any access from the end user.

“Consider the following scenario, you have a multiprocessor computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows XP, the computer has exactly 32 processors and you resume the computer from hibernation (S4),” Microsoft said. The Redmond company revealed that, in this case, either XP SP3 or Vista SP1 running on multiprocessor machines will stop respond and present the user with a black screen. The Black Screen of Death is displayed upon the resume from hibernation action. Such a process will successfully block Vista SP1 and XP SP3, the operating systems requiring a restart in order to regain functionality.

Windows Vista Can't Log In: "The system could not access the Credential Manager Server"

Credential Manager is a new SSO solution that Microsoft offers in Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP and also in Windows Vista. It's based on a secure client-side credential-caching mechanism.Single sign-on (SSO) is an approach that attempts to reduce the time users spend performing logon tasks and the number of passwords users must remember. The Open Group, an international vendor and technology-neutral consortium dedicated to improving business efficiency, defines SSO as the "mechanism whereby a single action of user authentication and authorization can permit a user to access all computers and systems where that user has access permission, without the need to enter multiple passwords". The Windows 2000 (and earlier) requirement that users must reenter the same credentials whenever they access resources on the same Internet or intranet server can be frustrating for users, especially when they have more than one set of credentials. Administrators often must cope with the same frustration when they have to switch to alternative credentials to perform administrative tasks.

When you are trying to logon to Windows vista computer,you will get an error message says "The system can not access the Credential Manger Server" .Also when you are tried logging on to Windows Vista with the local admin account, but it tells that it is disabled, and tried again by disconnecting the Windows Vista computer from the network and then trying to logon, but get the error message, "The server is not responding properly. Verify that the Credential Manager server is properly installed on the target server."

HERE'S WHAT YOU DO TO RID YOURSELF OF THIS PROBLEM IN WINDOWS VISTA.(For HP laptop)

Login to Windows Vista as a local administrator in SAFE MODE by hit F[8] before the boot process starts .Then go to services and DISABLE everything that starts with HP.

Reboot the system. Hit F[10] while it's starting and disable the security settings (the second column halfway down). You'll have to configure a password to do it for some reason.

Anyway, then you should be able to login on the local admin in NON-SAFEMODE.

Then go Windows vista START- > HP PROTECTTOOL SECURITY MANAGER - >Credential Manager -> SETTINGS and DISABLE CREDENTIAL MANAGER. If you want disable the multifactor authentication (by enabling password only) under Credential Manager -> MULTIFACTOR AUTHENTICATION.

Missing Internet Explorer 6 in Windows Vista?

Some people hate change and I've had more than one person write about how they don't like the new layout of Internet Explorer 7. So here are some quick tips how you can make it work more like the crappy old IE 6…

1) From the IE7 main menu at the top left under the search box, click "Tools" and then "Internet Options"

2) On the "General" tab, click the "Settings" button under "Tabs". Deselect "Enable Tabbed Browsing" and press "OK"

3) Close IE and start it up again.

4) Right click on the toolbar (where the icons are at the top of the window) and check "Menu Bar"

5) If you have other toolbars like, the Google toolbar and want to move them around, you'll need to unlock the Toolbars by right-clicking on them and deselecting "Lock the Toolbars". Then you can drag the toolbars and resize them as you wish.

* While you can customize the search box to make it use other providers, you cannot remove it.
* You'd probably prefer the menu bar on the top of the page, but it cannot be moved above the address bar.
* You can customize the icons and tools in the IE toolbar, but you cannot remove it entirely or add new commands that are not listed. Right-click and choose "Customize Command Bar" to see what options you have available.

So, that gets you closer to IE6 cosmetically, but I really feel that IE7 is a big move forward from IE6 and it is worth getting used to. Of course, if you hate change you won't be looking to move to FireFox, but I do recommend giving it a look!

Device Security via Group Policy in Windows Vista

Windows Vista offers a new security capability in its ability to configure removable device controls through the use of Group Policy. It lets you control which devices can be installed on a system. In particular, there are many rightfully concerned that someone could plug in a removable disk drive and walking away with sensitive data.

To make use of this new capability, you create an approved list of devices on your network and include it in your GPO. It may be okay for users to install USB mice and keyboards, but not flash memory devices or external disk drives. MP3 players, PDAs and cell phones can also function as drives that can be used to store potentially large amounts of data. You must control their use through a properly-designed GPO.

Prevent installation of all devices
Prevent standard users from installing any device, but allow administrators to install or update devices. To complete this scenario, you configure two computer policies. The first computer policy prevents all users from installing devices, and the second policy exempts administrators from the restrictions.

Allow users to install only authorized devices
Allow users to install only the devices included on a list of authorized devices. This scenario builds on the first scenario and therefore you must complete the first scenario before attempting this scenario. To complete this scenario, you create a list of authorized devices so that users can install only those devices that you specify.

Prevent installation of only prohibited devices
Allow standard users to install most devices but prevent them from installing devices included on a list of prohibited devices. To complete this scenario, you must remove the policies that you created in the first two scenarios. After you have removed those policies, you create a list of prohibited devices so that users can install any device except those that you specify.

Control the use of removable media storage devices
Prevent standard users from writing data to removable storage devices, or devices with removable media, such as a USB memory drive or a CD or DVD burner. Folder Redirection in Windows Vista

Folder redirection refers to the redirection of user folders such as Documents, Pictures, Start Menu and Desktop. While in Windows XP, only five folders could be redirected, Vista allows ten folders. Folder redirection is intended to replace the older concept of having a "home folder" for users. The problem with this (and most of us Admins still face this with users) is that there are too many applications that do not allow you to specify a default path for storing data files and users simply accept the default ending up with some files on the network, some in their [potentially roaming] profile and some on the local system.

Folder redirection supports two modes: Basic and Advanced. Basic redirection sends everyone’s folders to the same location and creates special subfolders for each user while advanced lets you to set folder redirection paths for specific groups.

You're probably aware this can be controlled via Group Policy in a corporate environment, but it is actually very easy to use at home as well. Backups are much easier when your data is separated from the local machine. If you don't have a server or network attached storage device at home, you could also redirect folders to a second (removable/USB) drive. It is actually as simple as moving the desired folder from where it is to where you want it to be! All references by the system will dynamically be updated to reference the new location.

WMI Control in Windows Vista

WMI (Windows Management Instrumentation) offers a ton of data about a Windows computer. It is a open database of information that Microsoft and others populate with virtually all details regarding your system. While management software can (and often does) take advantage of this data collection, it is also very easy to get at this information from scripts.

There are a number of WMI script generators out there including Microsoft’s Script-O-Matic and other copycat tools. One worth mentioning is provided as the “WMI Wizard” in the “Admin Script Editor” (www.adminscripteditor.com) tool. A couple of unique things it does includes generating script code in PowerShell, VBScript, KiXtart or AutoIt scripting languages and showing sample values for selected properties. The latter is important because while you may see something that looks like just what you want when browsing about, all too often the value is either unpopulated or unfriendly (unreadable that is). The feature is fully functional in the 45 day trial available for download.

You can control WMI from the WMI Control snap-in in the MMC.

The general tab shows you some basic information pulled from WMI regarding your system. Probably nothing you didn’t know here. The Backup/Restore tab lets you do as you’d expect. With the Security tab we finally get to something interesting. Here you can specify security on any level similar to how you would on most other items such as files and folders. Finally, there is an “Advanced” tab which has but one setting and that is to allow for you to specify the default namespace for purposes of scripting. This is set to root\cimv2 by default and is not something you would normally change as this is where most of the classes exist that pertains to your system. With this set, you need not specify the full path to the namespace when referencing a class as in the example below.

In the above example I’m just getting the Asset Tag code from the system BIOS. All data returned from WMI is provided as a collection, so even when you know there is one result it is necessary to address it this way. For example if you were looking for drive information, each collection would provide information on a different drive and there could be any number of drives returned depending on the system. Here it makes sense, but just keep in mind the rule is the same for when you know there is only one response

Microsoft Windows Vista:20 Hidden Featured Tools

The default installation of Windows Vista weighs in at approximately 8 GB. In fact, Microsoft's latest operating system won't even install with less than 15 GB of space available on the hard drive. This is valid for both the low-end and the high-end editions of the platform. A full WindowsVista installation will take up no less than 40 times more hard disk space compared to Windows 95's 200 MB and five times more than Windows XP's 1.5 GB. Part of the reason why Windows Vista hugs so much hard disk real estate space is the fact that the operating system brings to the table a plethora of built-in administrative tools that ship by default with the platform.

In this context, the term hidden, is not entirely accurate. Advanced users and system administrators have no problems tracking down and using the administrative tools in Vista. But at the same time, an average user could pass right by them, just because of their low footprint in the operating system's fabric, as they simply have a way to go by virtually undocumented and unnoticed. But this does not mean that the tools are not there, it just requires a bit of digging under the surface. And you will be surprised of how many long-time Windows users have failed to take a deeper look under the hood of the operating system, even if it would make their life so much easier.

You'll be surprised of what is lying beneath. But at the same time you have to understand that a large part of these utilities are not new to Vista, although they all suffered enhancements. Some of them are obviously survivors from older editions of Windows. But this is besides the point. You should at least be aware of the luxuriant resources within your grasp, provided of course that you are running Windows Vista. Also, while the tools exemplified in this article are to a certain degree common to all SKUs of Vista, you would do better to focus on the high-end editions of the operating system, such as Business, Enterprise and Ultimate, and less on Home Basic and Home Premium, as some items might be missing or limited in functionality on the latter two examples of the platform.

1. Task Manager

Right, I thought I would debut with something as common as the Start Menu. The Windows Task Manager can be launched via Ctrl + Shift + Esc, or by Alt + Ctrl + Delete, as well as by right clicking the Taskbar and choosing Task Manager from the options in the contextual menu that pops up. The Windows Task Manager in Vista is designed to run with standard user privileges, and as such, will not deliver a User Account Prompt. The tool will permit you to manage Applications, Processes, Services, and to monitor Performance, Networking and the active Users through the corresponding tabs. If you are looking to kill a program that is not responding, identify the process associated with a certain program or simply check the CPU cycles or the amount of system memory cached, then Task Manager is the simplest and most accessible tool.

2. Network and Sharing Center

"The Network and Sharing Center puts you in control of your network connectivity. It's a place where you can check your connection status, view your network visually, and troubleshoot connection problems. The Network and Sharing Center informs you about your network and verifies whether your PC can successfully access the Internet—then summarizes this info in the form of a Network Map," reads a fragment of Microsoft's description of the resource.

But the Network and Sharing Center is only the surface of the Windows Network Diagnostics tool in Windows Vista, an automated utility designed to identify, diagnose and resolve connectivity problems. And in its turn, the Windows Network Diagnostics tool is just a part of the Network Diagnostics Framework (NDF) in Vista. Every time you will run into connectivity issues, NDF can provide a way out. The Network and Sharing Center is located under Control Panel, Network and Internet.

3. Backup, Shadow Copies, System Restore

There is an intimate connection between backup, shadow copies, system restore and restore points in Windows Vista. And there are two locations that will permit you to both have a general perspective of the status of the capabilities mentioned and to configure them, the Backup Status and Configuration and the Backup and Restore Center. Both can be launched by entering "Backup" in the search box under the Start Menu.

Via the Backup Status and Configuration you will be able to manage automatic file backup and handle the settings, as well as perform advanced restore or a complete PC backup. The Backup and Restore Center offers basically the same functionality but is additionally focused on creating system restore point and activating the shadow copies’ features.

4. Windows BitLocker Drive Encryption

Available exclusively in Windows Vista Enterprise and Ultimate, Windows BitLocker Drive Encryption is designed to help ensure the privacy of sensitive data by encryption. Although the default configuration of BitLocker requires a Trust Platform Module, the fact of the matter is that TPMs are rare in use outside of corporate environments, but users will be able to use the tool nonetheless, although without some functionality. With Windows Vista SP1, the Redmond company will also allow users to encrypt additional volumes on top of the operating system drive, protected by default.

"During computer startup, if BitLocker detects a system condition that could represent a security risk (for example, disk errors, a change to the BIOS , or changes to any startup files), it will lock the drive and require a special BitLocker recovery password to unlock it. Make sure that you create this recovery password when you turn on BitLocker for the first time; otherwise, you could permanently lose access to your files", is the warning Microsoft provides with the use of BitLocker.

5. Program Compatibility Wizard

The Program Compatibility Wizard under Control Panel and Programs will permit you to use an older program with Windows Vista. The tool is designed to help users that are experiencing functionality issues with an application in Vista, although the problems were not there with a prior version of Windows. The wizard will detect all the programs installed, and also permit the selection and testing of compatibility settings. Everything from display settings, to desktop composition and to administrative privileges can be set through the wizard.

6. Microsoft Management Console 3.0

"Microsoft Management Console (MMC) hosts administrative tools that you can use to administer networks, computers, services, and other system components," reads an excerpt of the Redmond company's description of the resource. The Microsoft Management Console 3.0, also known as Console Root or Console 1, has been around since Windows 2000. You can open it by typing "mmc" in the Search box under the Start menu, in a Run dialog box or in a command prompt window. MMC is essentially not an administrative tool, as it does not perform any such tasks, but it does provide hosting for various components including: Local security Policy, Computer Management, Event Viewer, and the Reliability and Performance Monitor as snap-ins which can be added for local or remote computers on the network.

7. Computer Management

Computer Management is a collection of administrative components. Accessible by entering "Computer Management" in the Search box under Start Menu, you can find items placed in three categories: System Tools, Storage and Services and Applications. Computer Management comes with the Task Scheduler, Event Viewer, Shared Folders, Local Users and Groups, the Reliability and Performance Monitor, Device Manager, Disk Management, as well as Services and WMI Control.

8. WMI - Windows Management Instrumentation

"Effective management of PC and server systems in an enterprise network benefits from well-instrumented computer software and hardware, which allow system components to be monitored and controlled, both locally and remotely. Typing "Services" in the Search box under the Start Menu will open the tool with exactly this name. Essentially, the utility will provide an exhaustive list of all the processes in Windows Vista complete with name, description, status and startup type. The console will allow you to stop, restart or start various services across the operating system, as well as getting an insight into all the properties of the services enumerated by the tool.

10. Disk Management

Disk Management in Windows Vista is under Control Panel, System and Maintenance, Administrative Tools, Computer Management, Storage. A breeze to navigate if you were to ask me. The system utility will help you manage partitions and hard disks. Disk initialization, creating volumes, and formatting with the FAT, FAT32, or NTFS file systems are all tasks offered by Disk Management.

11. Device Manager

"Device Manager provides you with a graphical view of the hardware that is installed on your computer. All devices communicate with Windows through a piece of software called a device driver. You can use Device Manager to install and update the drivers for your hardware devices, modify hardware settings for those devices, and troubleshoot problems", is the overview Microsoft provides of the tool. Device Manager permits users to modify hardware configuration settings, get a complete overview of all devices, perform device drivers installation and uninstallation actions, as well as enable and disable certain items.

12. Windows Reliability and Performance Monitor

Under Control Panel, System and Maintenance, Administrative Tools, the Windows Reliability and Performance Monitor is the big brother of the monitoring features provided by the Task Manager. Event Viewer enables you to perform the following tasks: view events from multiple event logs; save useful event filters as custom views that can be reused; schedule a task to run in response to an event and create and manage event subscriptions", reads the tool's overview.

15. Task Scheduler

The Task Scheduler is also hosted under Control Panel, System and Maintenance, Administrative Tools and the name is pretty much explanatory. You can use the tool to schedule automated tasks in concordance with a specific time or a certain event. The utility will also offer a complete library of scheduled tasks allowing you to delete unnecessary items, in addition to options such as run, disable and modify.

16. Memory Diagnostics Tool

Normally, you will access the Memory Diagnostics Tool via the Windows Vista installation disk. But there is also another way. The utility can be found under Control Panel, System and Maintenance, Administrative Tools and, when launched, it will offer to restart immediately and check for RAM problems, or analyze the system memory the next time the computer is started. This is a very useful tool that will identify and diagnose memory problems.

17. System Configuration

System Configuration can be launched by entering "msconfig" in the Search box under the Start menu. It will offer users five tabs and with them the possibility to manage the startup process, boot options, the services across Vista, a reduced list of start-up items as well as providing shortcuts to a range of tools in the operating system. Under the Tools tab, you will be able to find some more hidden Vista goodies such as Internet Protocol Configuration, UAC and easy access to the registry.

18. System Information

"System Information (also known as msinfo32.exe) shows details about your computer's hardware configuration, computer components, and software, including drivers," reads the general description of the tool. System Information offers users a view over System Summary, the Hardware Resources and the Software Environment. The tool will display information about the operating system and its general settings, hardware and programs. Just type "msinfo32.exe" in the Search box under the Start Menu in order to launch it.

19. Windows Firewall with Advanced Security

Windows Firewall with Advanced Security is a bit of a hidden gem in Windows Vista. Located under Control Panel, Administrative Tools the tool is a bundle between a host firewall and Ipsec. If you want control over packets for IPv4 and IPv6 traffic, then this utility is the right answer for you, no doubt about it. You will be able to configure rules that will then apply to all incoming and outgoing traffic.

20. Local Security Policy

Also placed under Control Panel, Administrative Tools, the Local Security Policy will allow you to configure policies for the Vista Accounts, Local Policies, Public Key Policies, Software Restrictions Policies, IP Security Policies on Local Computer and the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security.

Opening Files in Notepad
To send the files to notepad, follow the steps below:
1. Go to %SystemDrive%\documents and settings\%username%\sendto
2. Right click on the right hand panel and select "New|Shortcut"
3. Create a new shortcut to notepad.exe in to the sentto folder.

Now if you right click any REG, TXT, VBS, CMD, DAT, NFO file, you can chose the "Send to" menu and send the file to Notepad which will immediately open it for editing.

Hacking windows SEND TO MENU
I know this is a very simple thing but the problem, as like many other issues, is the ignorance about it.

How often do you copy songs from a CD? Or some photos from a CD?

What do you do? You select the required files and do a CTRL –C. Open the destination folder and do a CTRL-V. Here is something you can benefit time from. Customize your SEND TO MENU.

This sounds simple and you can do it in less than sixty seconds.
You can create your own BASKET.

First you’ll need access to hidden files. So change your view settings to make all hidden files visible.
Tools -> folder options -> view (tab) and select the show hidden files and folders.
go to parent drive:/documents and settings/(user name)/send to

Open up my computer and locate your most used folders.

Create a shortcut of the most used folders in SEND TO FOLDER.You can do this in a number of ways.

Right click -> send to desktop(create shortcut) and move the shortcut from the desktop to the SEND TO FOLDER

Copy the most used folder and go to SEND TO FOLDER and right click -> paste shortcut.

Also remember to rename the shortcuts to send to videos or send to potos. We don’t need confusion when we use the same later.

How to repair xp and save ur time.

Last known good config: Always the easiest to try first before settling for a reinstallation of Windows XP. Reboot the PC and tap F8 while you wait for boot options to be displayed for you. Once there, choose "Last known good configuration."

System restore: In some cases, a reinstallation can be avoided by using system restore. If you are unable to get system restore to work from within safe mode, you can try to access it from within a command prompt. You do not need to leave safe mode to do this, just follow these instructions closely:

Reboot into safe mode with a command prompt.
Get to an administrator account so that you have the needed permissions to get things done.
At the command prompt, type: %systemroot%\system32 restore strui.exe
Follow the instructions to restore your PC to an earlier state of operation.
Recovery console: The XP recovery console can be a very useful utility when employed with care. There are a variety of situations where having access to it can be really handy. In fact, you need to get access to it before we go any further.

Reboot from the Windows XP CD. Once you arrive at the welcome screen, choose "R" for recovery.
You will be asked which Windows installation you wish to access. Choose the appropriate number.
Now a prompt for your administrator password will appear. Enter it and continue (if no password, press enter).
Now we are ready to roll up our sleeves and get to work. While at the console, you can type help for a list of available commands that are at your disposal. For example, you can repair a messed up boot sector by typing FIXBOOT and then typing enter afterward. If you are having difficulty booting up because of a messed up ntldr file, however, then you might need to replace it by typing:
COPY E:\i386\NTLDR C:
(Keep in mind this is assuming that E: is the correct drive letter for your CD ROM drive). Once you have repaired what you have needed to from the recovery console, simply type EXIT at the prompt to leave and restart Windows.
When all else fails, sometimes reinstalling is the best medicine. Below, we will look at two very different methods to accomplish this.

Repair installation: Running a repair install of Windows XP can be a handy way of fixing the installation of XP without having to start totally over and deleting important data from your PC. To do this type of install, simply follow these instructions.

Boot from your XP installation CD.
At the welcome screen, choose enter.
Once at the license agreement, press F8.
At the next screen, choose to repair the selected Windows XP installation by pressing R.
The files will begin to install and then your PC will reboot. During the reboot you will be presented with option of booting from the CD again by pressing any key. Don't press anything. Allow it to finish the install without booting from the CD again.

Full reinstallation of Windows XP: If all else fails and you are ready to completely delete everything on your hard drive, then you are ready to do a full reinstallation.
You will be erasing everything, so make sure you already have a backup of any important data before you continue. Follow the instructions above 'til you arrive at step 4. At that point, choose to continue installing a fresh copy of XP on your system and NOT the repair option. Black Viper has a great walkthrough that will take you step by step through the nuances of setting up your partitions, formatting, etc.

Windows Registry Editor: REGEDIT

The registry contains many many Windows settings (and changes continuously), which can be viewed with the Registry Editor. Because many pages on this site (and other websites) contain registry tweaks, you need the Registry Editor to apply those registry tweaks. The Registry Editor is started with the command REGEDIT (Start, Run..., create a shortcut if you use Registry Editor frequently). Welcome in the world of the registry entries!

Most important to remember using the Registry Editor: there is NO WAY back. If you change something, it is permanent unless you have made a (partly) registry backup (File, Export). Worst case scenario: your Windows doesn't boot anymore! However, this is not a reason to leave the Registry Editor for what it is, frightened to do something wrong. If you carefully follow the instructions and ensure yourself you are making the right changes, nothing will go wrong. Before you make permanent major changes, it's wise first to make a system backup, to repair any damage.

As shown below, the registry (Start, Run, REGEDIT) contains 5 basic keys: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, HKEY_CURRENT_USER, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, HKEY_USERS and HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG. Most suggested registry tweaks will be suggested for the HKEY_CURRENT_USER and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE keys. The first key contains settings for the current user account while the second key contains settings for the Windows system.

Tweaks for the HKEY_CURRENT_USER keys can be safely tested by creating an extra user account (Control Panel, User accounts). Within the new test user account you can test those tweaks and remove the user account afterwards. Before you make essential changes to the registry, you can export the keys first to a *.REG file by File, Export within the Registry Editor. Later you can import those registry files by File, Import or by double clicking on them in the Windows Explorer. This way it's easy to export registry settings from one computer to the other.

An important function within the Registry Editor is the search function (Edit, Search). Using the F3 key makes it easy to find next items in the registry.

TRACKING CHANGES IN THE WINDOWS REGISTRY :
Most tools make changes in the registry keys. If you would like to know which changes take place, you can find them with a realtime monitoring tool like Process Monitor (download: www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/ProcessesAndThreads/processmonitor.mspx). If you would like to compare the difference before and after a change, you can create snapshots and calculate the changes. You can do this with trialsoftware like Advanced Registry Tracer (download: www.elcomsoft.com/art.html) or Tracker (download: www.evansprogramming.com/tracker.asp).

TWEAKUI is one of the most known Windows Powertoys/Powertools (issued but not supported by Microsoft) to tweak the User Interface (UI). With this tool you are able to change settings, which aren't reachable within Windows. Reset an XP Password in various ways

This article has every possible method on how you can reset an XP password.

Recovering lost administrator windows N4/XP/Vista isn’t a complicated task and I know several easy ways to do so. Which method you’d use it’s up to you, but I usually try ERD first. But first things first – let’s present the options:

Option #1

ERD – Emergency recovery disk. Using this method you need to prepare ahead, by downloading one of FREE ERD tools and burning it onto CD.

ERDs are Free Windows password-cracking tools are usually Linux boot disks that have NT file system (NTFS) drivers and software that will read the registry and rewrite the password hashes for any account including the Administrators. This process requires physical access to the console but it works like a charm! I've done it myself several times with no glitch or problem whatsoever.

Caution: If used on users that have EFS encrypted files, and the system is XP or later service packs on W2K, all encrypted files for that user will be UNREADABLE! And cannot be recovered unless you remember the old password again!

Pros: Quick, Works in 99% of cases.

Cons: Might seem complicated for notice user, doesn’t work with certain SATA disk and/or Raid controllers

· Works with syskey (no need to turn it off, but you can if you have lost the key)

· Will detect and offer to unlock locked or disabled out user accounts!

To write these images to a floppy disk you'll need RawWrite2 which is included in the Bootdisk image download. To create the CD you just need to use your favorite CD burning program and burn the .ISO file to CD. I personally prefer CD option since I don’t have to fiddle around with antique technology like floppy drives, besides most of new pc don’t have floppy drive at all.

Author claims that this tool was successfully tested on NT 3.51, NT 4, Windows 2000 (except datacenter), Windows XP (all versions) and Window Server 2003. Notice that it is NOT compatible with Active Directory. EBCD – Emergency Boot CD (v0.61 - October 2004)

EBCD is a bootable CD, intended for system recovery in the case of software or hardware faults. It is able to create backup copies of normally working system and restore system to saved state. It contains the best system software ever created, properly compiled and configured for the maximum efficient use.

EBCD will be very useful when you need to:

· Copy/move files (with long names, not necessary in CP437 encoding) from/to the disk but OS which can handle them (windows, Linux...) cannot boot. In particular, you may create a backup copy of normally installed and configured Windows and later restore Windows from such backup copy. So, in the case of fault OS itself and all software and its settings can be restored in 5-10 minutes.

· Perform emergency boot of Windows NT / 2000 / XP. When the loader of this OS on the hard disk is damaged or misconfigured, you are able to load OS using another, standalone loader from this CD.

· Recover master boot record of HDD. This allows to boot OS after incorrect uninstallation of custom loader (LILO, for example), which made all OS on your PC not bootable.

· Delete, move, copy to file (image) and re-create partition from file. Image transfer over network is also supported: so you may configure one PC and then make contents of hard disks of other PCs same as contents of the hard disk of the first one.

· Change password of any user, including administrator of Windows NT/2000/XP OS. You do not need to know the old password.

· Recover deleted file, even file re-deleted from Windows Recycle Bin, and, in contrast, wipe single file or a whole disk so that it will be impossible to recover it in any way.

· Recover data from accidentally formatted disk. Sometimes it helps to recover data from the disk, damaged by a virus.

· Recover data from a floppy disk, which is not readable by OS. Format 3.5" disk for 1.7 Mb size.

Also the disk includes full set of external DOS commands, console versions of the most popular archivers/compressors.

Moreover, emergency boot CD includes minimal Linux distribution (Rescue Linux distribution) which may be very useful to a professional user.

Option #2

Lets say, worst happened – its past 11pm, you are still at work, accidentally forgot admin password and ALL ERD tools don’t work, since the pc you are working on have non-standard disk controller. What to do???

Luckily for us, Microsoft left loophole, big enough to do the task relatively easy:

1. Place in windows XP CD and start your computer (it’s assumed here that your XP CD is bootable – as it should be - and that you have your bios set to boot from CD)

2. Keep your eye on the screen messages for booting to your cd usually it will be “Press any key to boot from cd”

3. Begin windows Repair process.

4. During the reboot, do not make the mistake of “pressing any key” to boot from the CD again!

5. Keep your eye on the lower left hand side of the screen and when you see the Installing Devices progress bar, press SHIFT + F10. This is the security hole! A command console will now open up giving you the potential for wide access to your system.

From here you can run any windows command and you’ll have full administrator access. To reset password you can use ether of two ways:

1) Run NUSRMGR.CPL to get graphical interface

2) Run Compmgmt.msc to get Computer Management console. From there use Local User and Groups->Users

Most homes within the United Kingdom are now equipped with a personal computer that is connected to the World Wide Web, but there are still a number of people who don’t. Even though over a huge sixteen and a half million homes within Britain are enjoying broadband or even dial up internet, there are still a lot of people either unable to get the equipment or actually shunning the technology.

A recent survey organised by the Office of National Statistics was given to members of the public of all ages and backgrounds to try and get to the bottom of why this is. The results showed that there are a common set of answers offering explanations for this decision that boil down to the following:

- Lack of skills.
- Not interested in the internet.
- Equipment too expensive.
- Access to internet elsewhere.
- Access costs too high.

However the amount of people without said access has lowered considerably since 2006. The amount of people aged over 65 years without internet has also lowered from 85% to 70%, showing that the older generations of the United Kingdom are beginning to embrace technology.

Of the households that do have internet access set up, 86% of them have high speed broadband connections showing that it shouldn’t be too long until the now well outdated dial up modem is bred out of existence.

Computer skills classes are also popping up anywhere from the local school to churches, in a bid to get the older generations familiar with how to use a computer and how to browse the internet in the most successful way. There are also many companies offering cheap and cheerful laptops with inbuilt modems and accessories to make it possible for people less privileged to get their hands on the biggest resource of the millennium!

It has long been established that a mobile phone is more than just a communications device for ease and emergencies. But I’m not even talking about the integrated camera, web browser, camcorder or MP3 player – I mean the vanity side of owning the latest model on the market and flashing it to others at every opportunity – fashion.

Since the iPhone hit the shops and had people literally camping outside to get the first hundred in the country there have been in big increase in phone sporting a square or rectangle shape with a large glossy screen, touch sensitive or not.

The same happens every time that a new phone emerges and is successful and sports a different look to what we’re used to. When Motorola first released the Pebl, clamshell style phones began to pop up everywhere from all of the top phone companies. Again when we saw Nokia bring out the first phone with a full QWERTY keyboard we began to see all manors of phone designs integrating keyboards into their hardware.

I recently saw a mobile phone with a mono colour screen with incredibly basic applications as it was made over six years ago. However it was still £10,000 due to it being encrusted with crystals and gold! There are modern phones being created for the A-Lister’s out there with such additions as there being an a grade ruby fitted into the “on button” and multicoloured crystals in each other number buttons.

Basically the mobile phone has fallen into the grasps of the fashion industry, and it’s likely to be very bad for our pockets looking at the average lifespan of a fashionable accessory. Who knows, perhaps women soon won’t be known to have a “thing” for shoes, and it will be “which phone to use today” instead.
